Name of event or initiative:Lunar New Year Celebration
Brief overview of the event or initiative:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many international students were not able to go back to their home country and reunite with their families to celebrate the Lunar New Year, thus we hosted this event at UC to provide students with a chance to gather and celebrate this special day.

What were the aims of the event or initiative?

UCGS presented this unique event with the aim of bringing domestic and international students together to celebrate the Lunar New Year. During this event, we highlighted and acknowledged the different ways in which numerous cultures traditionally celebrate their Lunar New Year.

The main part of the event was the Yeesang, also known as the Prosperity Toss Salad, a traditional Malaysian custom commonly done during the Lunar New Year. Traditional food and customs were also shared throughout the event.

Attendees told us they enjoyed this event, and that this year they had a wonderful gathering with the UC family.

How did you make it happen?

We have had several event preparation meetings and each executive member had a certain task. The presidents were in charge of looking for the sponsorship; the marketing team designed promotional materials and was in charge of ticketing; the event operation team set up the venue and prepared the catering; etc.

We successfully found two sponsors for this event and one sponsor for a part of catering. The sponsors were the UC International Relations Office (IRO), the UC Business School and Chopsticks Restaurant. Overall, there were around 80 attendees including UC students and staff during the event.

How did you make it better?

We, the UCGS executive team, were a little bit stressed because this was the first big event hosted by us. It was the first event organised by the 2021 UCGS Executive Team. However, we made this event happen with great success because we have had clear plans, good preparations and awesome teamwork. The sponsorship we have allowed us to make this event free. We also tried to use different ways to promote the events, such as in social media, through UC departments, and through sponsors. The event won’t have been a success without every executive’s hard work, contribution and cooperation.

How did you show your commitment to sustainability?

One of the main reasons why people gather together during the Lunar New Year is to catch up and bond with families or to meet new people. For our event, we successfully managed to include the sustainability factor, whereby we reduce the use of electronic devices throughout the event. Attendees were having fun throughout the event by playing traditional board games like Mahjong and Chinese chess, and other games like the spoon game, Uno and Monopoly. As a result, UCGS would like to say that even without the use of electronics, we are still able to make the event successful.
