Name of event or initiative:Understudied - the MUSOC book club
Brief overview of the event or initiative:

Established in late 2020, Understudied is run weekly during term time and is available for anyone to attend. It is a social and educational event run by members for members and seeks to develop skills and provide a fun learning environment for a range of aspects within musical theatre.

What were the aims of the event or initiative?

Understudied allows MUSOC to engage with a wider range of musical theatre than it does within the current schedule of its major productions. Individuals who are not performing in MUSOC major shows (and those who are) are actively able to be a part of the wider MUSOC community. It is a way to upskill in the field of musical theatre by exploring realms of music theory, dance, tech, and many more. By providing regular and engaging learning opportunities, Understudied aims to benefit individual members as well as the club as a whole.

How did you make it happen?

Understudied was brought to life and is run by the talents and knowledge of MUSOC’s own club members. The opportunities available within our club (acting, music, dance, tech etc) see our member base consisting of a diverse population with a wide range of skills. Those engaging with Understudied are keen to learn from their peers and also educate where they are best skilled.

How did you make it better?

We are constantly striving to make Understudied the best it can be by listening to the suggestions of members and providing opportunities for the betterment of the club. The initiative began with a trial period over three weeks and attendees were then asked to provide feedback and suggestions. The responses heard were taken into consideration in running subsequent sessions and helped in planning its continuation. We ran a tap dancing workshop and organised future open mic nights based on suggestions from members which have been well received. Understudied was also able to run via Zoom during the recent lockdown.

How did you show your commitment to sustainability?

Understudied is not an event that is inherently ‘un-sustainable’ and we use resources available to us on UC campus. We are conscious of producing as little waste as possible with our events. One example of this was our group baking session we held on Zoom during lockdown. We chose a recipe (apple crumble) that required ingredients that most people would already have at home. This meant people would not have to go out during lockdown and put unnecessary pressure on supermarkets and also not buy ingredients that may go to waste if they did not use the rest of them.
