Brief overview of the event or initiative:

This is an approximately four hours event organised for icebreaking and meeting sessions among CMSA members, international and local people in Christchurch. This event will be full of games and gifts. The proposed theme would be Christmas Celebration with a target of 200 attendees.

What were the aims of the event or initiative?

The event aims to strengthen the bond between CMSA members and other international students during the pandemic. This event also provides the platform for these students to form stronger connections and support for each other. The objectives of the event are to encourage participants to meet new faces around campus, give students the opportunity to have some catch-up sessions with each other after a 6-week break and providing a platform for international and local audiences to interact and socialize.

How did you make it happen?

In order to make this event a success, we managed to receive a lot of support from the UC community itself. UCSA, UC Business School, UC International Relationships Office, UC International College, UC College of Engineering and UC College of Science have supported us by offering a generous sponsorship and marketing of the event. UC Global Society and UC Vietnamese Student Community also collaborated with us and help with manpower to make the event a success.

How did you make it better?

In order to make the event the best it could be, we collaborated with two other UC clubs, UCGS and UCVSC, these clubs were assigned to organise and manage the decoration of the venue and become coordinators of the games. CMSA could focus more on securing sponsors, promoting the event, managing foods, activities, event flow and making sure the smoothness of the event. Everyone has a specific role and this helped to make the event a great success.

How did you show your commitment to sustainability?

In order to promote sustainability, the cutleries and plates used during the event are porcelain and stainless steel in order to reduce waste and avoid plastic use. We also hand out the gifts in a paper bag to make sure that it is easier for the attendees to recycle them. The decorations used for the event are also long term decorations that can be kept and used for other events as well. Some of the decorations used are also borrowed from other clubs in order to reduce purchase and also waste.
