Name of event or initiative:Freshers
Brief overview of the event or initiative:

Freshers is CUTC's first event of the university year. It is a tramping trip that focuses around the social aspects of joining a club. This is a chance for members to meet each other and make connections with like-minded people.

What were the aims of the event or initiative?

The purpose of Freshers is for our club members to become involved and meet each other. An important part of tramping is that you have someone to go with! This is one of our bigger trips, with a range of difficulties (easy, medium, and hard) to ensure that there is something for total newbies as well as the aspiring mountaineers. We use this trip to hook people into tramping and facilitate a lifelong love for the outdoors.

How did you make it happen?

The Freshers organizers look to their fellow CUTC committee members for support, aswell as past committee members who have experience in running such large tramps.

How did you make it better?

Freshers is an annual trip we run. After last years Freshers - where we were rained on for the majority of day 1 - we decided to postpone Freshers by one week to avoid bad weather. When taking a large group of trampers, with some very unexperienced, it was important to avoid the bad weather. A bad trip can stick with people for a long time, and the last thing we want to do is put people off. Next year we plan to purchase walkie-talkies to enable communication between the front and back of the group.

How did you show your commitment to sustainability?

We carpool on all of our trips to lessen the effects of us driving so far. We use the "take only photos, leave only footprints" mantra. We tramp because we love the untouched natural environment. A lot of our trips are spent admiring the fauna and flora, and educating ourselves on the natives on display.
