|Name of event or initiative:||UC Climbing takes on the Darrans|
Brief overview of the event or initiative:
This was a new trip to the Darran Mountains in Fiordland. The Darrans have some of the best granite climbing in New Zealand and it was an awesome trip encouraging members to push themselves and see an awesome part of the country that may otherwise seem out of reach.
What were the aims of the event or initiative?
As the only real advance trip the club has run, the aim was to encourage members to try climbing hard things and push themselves. We spend a lot of time teaching new people so the aim of this trip was more help our climbers see where climbing can take them and keep getting stronger and loving climbing. Our more experienced climbers are key to maintaining our knowledge base so keeping them inspired is important. At the same time we also hope to inspire our newer members to keep climbing with the goal of being able to come next year.
How did you make it happen?
We met with the New Zealand Alpine Club and have created a partnership with them in order to use their Hut in their Darrans. We hope to continue to develop this partnership, helping them with youth engagement while having better access to their facilities, skills and experience.
How did you make it better?
With the cost of fuel and the hut, the trip was not cheap. In future, it could be good to apply for a grant to bring the cost down and make it more accessible.
How did you show your commitment to sustainability?
By investing in our more experienced climbers, we hope to keep them invested and inspired which is essential to the sustainability of the club as really their skills and knowledge are some of our most valuable assets.
